Teachers have a significant role to perform in the development of a child?s overall knowledge. A primary educator will be accountable for educating many of the necessary knowledge and style that a child will probably need to relate with the world and to comprehend his journey through completely different situations. The lessons in proficiencies like reading, writing, and dealing with mathematical problems will be developed as a child moves on to greater stages and will retain with him all through his daily life as a knowledgeable and educated adult. There?s no doubt that an outstanding teacher provides a powerful impact on the basic foundation of a child?s perceptive abilities, emotional progress, and over-all outlook in life.

Plenty of people have the abilities and the determination to expect this essential task, while some may choose to practice different but equally valuable tasks within the classroom. Instead of study and get qualification to become a teacher in a certain stage, individuals thinking about a teaching position can choose to employ for part time teaching job opportunities as educating helpers.

In the U.K., teaching assistants usually employment in primary, secondary, or special schools. They offer necessary assistance to educators, facilitators, and pupils through a different range of educating roles. In some organizations, assistants may have overall tasks within a school room, while some may be designated to manage the education of a selected pupil or of a specified group of learners.

Training helper jobs in nurseries or primary educational institutions can be routine chores such as setting up the school room before students come in, proving art and craft works, managing play and dining spaces, escorting kids while having open air routines or expeditions, organising details, and liaising with guardians, carers, along with other teaching professionals.

Typically, there are no set prerequisites for a educating assistant?s skills, however, many organizations would favor that job hopefuls have nationally recognized credentials. They have to be at least Eighteen years of age to begin training in the field and those with applicable knowledge in nursery nursing and play task can be pondered. Volunteer assistants in schools can also train as teaching helpers at the same time. Job hopefuls with no previous knowledge in working with students or in education would be advisable to obtain distinct vocational skills.

Party to celebrate chief zebra Jones - High School Sports - The ...

MEG WOCHNICK | Staff writer ? Published August 30, 2012 Modified August 29, 2012

When you ask Tom Jones what?s changed in officiating high school football and basketball spanning five decades, he doesn?t hesitate: the skill of the players.

?Kids are so much faster now,? said Jones, 77. ?That?s what?s happened to the high school game.?

If you?ve been to a football or basketball game in South Sound during the past 40 years, Jones has had something to do with it ? whether it was coaching, officiating or making assignments. He retired last year after 41 years with the Olympia-based South Sound Officials Association, including 35 years as the association?s game-assigning secretary.

For his long service in the community as an official and a coach, Olympia High School will honor Jones prior to its season-opening football game Friday night against nationally ranked Lake Oswego (Ore.), the defending Oregon 6A state champion, at Ingersoll Stadium. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m.

Jones? career in zebra stripes started in the mid-1960s when he helped his brother-in-law officiate a boys basketball game at Olympia?s Jefferson Middle School. Soon after, he began officiating basketball and football.

He did that for more than 40 years and along the way helped spearhead the formation of the South Sound Officials Association in the early ?70s. The final football game Jones officiated was in 2010.

In addition to officiating, he coached Olympia?s fastpitch team for 14 seasons, until 2007.

In 2009, he was inducted into the Washington Officials Association?s Hall of Fame, but Jones said it means more to him to be honored at the local level.

?This is a local thing, so it makes it ? nicer than something at the state level,? said Jones, whose son, Tom Jones II, has been a basketball official in the area for 33 years.

Terry Simmonds, who has been with the SSOA since 1972 and took over in April from Jones as game assigner, said high school officials not working Friday night will be in attendance ? wearing their black-and-white stripes ? to help honor Jones.

Simmonds said 100 ceremonial coins have been made, and they feature a likeness of Jones on one side and the words ?South Sound Officials Association? on the other side. Jones will do the ceremonial coin toss, and former longtime KGY radio play-by-play broadcaster Dick Nichols will emcee the pregame event.

?He has done so much for not only our officials in our association, but with the state,? Simmonds said of Jones. ?He has mentored people to be better officials and to help our association be the best it can be.?

Tom Jones II said his father did whatever it took to assure the best quality of officials were at games, even if that meant that his father had to fill in on game nights.

?The effect of (how) he?s reached out to people is even mind-boggling to his son,? Jones II said. ?He?s always been my mentor. It?s going to be really exciting to see the outpouring of people.?

The ceremony for Jones is part of a big day planned at Ingersoll Stadium.

At 3 p.m. Friday, the Olympia and Lake Oswego junior varsity teams will play a game.

The main attraction is the varsity game between Olympia and Lake Oswego.

The Lakers, coached by former Oregon State wide receiver Steve Coury, finished last season ranked No. 23 in the ESPN/Powerade Fab 50 national rankings.

There will be a barbecue after the varsity game.

Olympia coach Bill Beattie said the challenge of facing the Oregon powerhouse will help his players and the Bears? coaching staff see and understand what it takes to get a program to a national level.

?We want our kids to be exposed to that,? Beattie said. ?They need to be able to chat with kids who have been at that level before. We know everyone around here, but to have a chance to be with a team that?s nationally ranked, it?s going to be exciting for our kids.?

FOOTBALL SEASON KICKS OFF TONIGHT

Two-a-days are complete, rosters are set and game plans have been installed.

The majority of South Sound teams kick off Friday, but Capital begins its season at 7 tonight on the road at Class 4A Newport High School in Bellevue.

It?s the first game of a tough nonleague schedule for the Cougars, who dropped down to Class 2A and also will face 4A foes Olympia, Bellarmine Prep and Bothell.

Sandwiched in-between is Capital?s 2A Evergreen Conference opener Sept. 22 against two-time EvCo champion Tumwater.

Capital and Newport have never faced each other in football.

In fact, the last time Newport faced a team from Thurston County was in 1993, when Tumwater defeated Newport, 31-30, in double overtime in the Class 3A state semifinals.

The Knights, who went 4-5 in 2011, feature senior quarterback Isaac Dotson (6-foot-3, 210 pounds), who gave an oral commitment to Nevada in June. As a junior, Dotson threw for 1,073 yards and rushed for 741 yards in Newport?s triple-option offense.

Capital, coming off a 3A state quarterfinal appearance in 2011, has a wealth of experience returning on both sides of the ball. Senior running back Kai Van Sickle rushed for 1,903 yards and scored 15 touchdowns last season.

Bryn Mawr Classical Review: 2012.08.49

The history of biology gives Aristotle a privileged position as the founding father of biology, zoology, systematics, comparative anatomy, and ethology.1 But an illusory idea of the linear development of biological sciences, still active in most reference books, presents Aristotle as "a boring obscurantist, leader of a philosophy that, for centuries to come, would taint the biological sciences"2 and thus removes him from the historical and cultural context in which he worked. In the past three decades this view has been largely overtaken by the now well-established "historical history of science" which, by turning to archaeological finds and primary, unpublished, and archival sources has allowed the traditional view to be redrawn and enabled a correct understanding of the development actually followed by technical and scientific thought. But, as Andrea L. Carbone has so capably argued in the Afterword to the Italian translation he edited of the Historia Animalium, it is still possible to read highly limiting reconstructions of the Stagirite's work which, in acknowledging him as the founding father of early attempts at systematically classifying living organisms, declares his failure, altering the true scope of his writings by subjecting them to ahistorical standards of reasoning.3 Such reconstructions deny the entire Aristotelian system any solid empirical and experimental basis, highlighting the gap between the formulation of a rigorous theory of scientific argumentation based on demonstration on the one hand and, on the other, Aristotle's recourse to a set of fanciful notions, to the use of a variety of forms of argumentation which are distant from and unrelated to the axiomatic status of science. As another example of this kind of approach, Carbone cites the Aristotle entry written in 1983 by the Nobel Prize biologist Peter Brian Medawar and Jane Shinglewood Medawar,4 in which Aristotle's biological works are defined as "a strange and generally speaking rather tiresome farrago of hearsay, imperfect observation, wishful thinking and credulity amounting to downright gullibility".5

This limited and misleading interpretive position, which is based on the inappropriate imposition of contemporary conceptual grids on a fourth-century B.C. speculative system has been challenged by the extraordinary growth of critical studies and translations of Aristotle's biological works in the last 40 years, which have shed new and more sympathetic light on them. Over the last decade, Andrea L. Carbone's own studies and translations of Aristotle's work6 have made possible the development of a new interpretation of Aristotelian biology which is of particular interest and fascination.

In the book reviewed here, Aristote illustr?. Repr?sentations du corps et sch?matisation dans la biologie aristot?licienne, Carbone demonstrates the existence of pens?e visuelle, visual thinking, in the Stagirite's theoretical and methodological system, which operates alongside discursive thinking and allows him to develop a description of the spatial organization of living bodies. According to Carbone, visual thinking is an observational technique, an ability to see, accompanied by a theoretical structure, which permits an observer to establish a series of complex relationships between the structure and the place of the constituent parts of a body inside the body and the functions they represent ? and to consider synoptically the differences that exist between the same parts in different animal species. For this reason, pens?e visuelle contributes significantly towards the biological research required by Aristotle both to determine genera through a variety of differences, and to determine the causes of those differences.

A living body, according to Carbone, is defined by Aristotle not as a simple set of component parts, but as a unit made unique by the position of its parts ? precisely the kind of differentiation that the modern scientific view assumes in exploring variety among living bodies. It appeals to a body plan, a schematization of the spatial arrangement of the parts that make up living beings, arranged according to polar axes that permit to establish their symmetry, general layout and boundaries, allowing the enumeration of relevant portions and having recursive structures as a particular reference.7 According to Carbone, the systematic schematization of the way in which living beings are organised, and the axonometric definition of a reference model for the comparison of their morphology was developed for the first time by Aristotle. Indeed, in Carbone's opinion, this constituted his most important contribution to the development of comparative anatomy.

For Aristotle, the human body is a regulatory model for studying the entire living world. His schematization essentially consists of: (a) polar coordinates, known as dimensional axes (right/left, forward/backward, up/down); (b) opposition between center and periphery; and (c) the distinction between different types of parts and regions of the body defined from a spatial and functional point of view. (The latter involves the identification of three organizational levels to classify: (i) the parts of the body: simple elements, homoeomerous and non-homoeomerous parts; (ii) the limbs and major sections ? head, neck, trunk, upper and lower extremities; and (iii) the casing needed to contain the components essential for the maintenance of vital functions.) As an example of this Carbone, mentions the use of the geometric concept of point used by Aristotle in zoology. In that content, the concept of point is conveyed with a new meaning centered on the analogy with the point of flexion of the limbs, which Carbone suggests calling an organic point.

This concept expresses better than any other the sense of the schematization present in Aristotle's work regarding biology, as it clearly provides a more appropriate sense of unity to the living organism, simultaneously unique and diverse like the flexional orientation of an animal's limbs: concave upper flexion and convex lower flexion in humans; concave lower flexion in birds; and convex upper flexion and concave lower flexion in quadrupeds.8 The book is divided into nine chapters (Voir les diff?rences, Le regard sur le corps, Les modeles de la sch?matisation, D?couper et diviser, La sch?matisation du plan d'organisation du corps comme principe de la biologie, La sch?matisation mise en ?uvre: le corps humain comme mod?le, La sch?matisation ? l'?uvre: les animaux autre que l'homme, La sch?matisation ? l'?uvre: la marche des animaux , Conclusion: la sch?matisation et l'unit? du vivante).

A suitable Bibliographie, a useful Index Locorum and an essential Table des illustrations conclude the work.

In contemporary evolutionary developmental biology (Evo-devo), one of the main objectives is to understand the genetic basis of morphological evolution, that is, to trace to common ancestors the variety of body plans of distinct taxa, reconstructing an evolutionary history that has resulted in the variety of more recent organic forms from a relatively limited and highly conserved set of genes in a phylogenetic view.
8.?? For Aristotle the human body is the basic unit as the straight line is in geometry. The organic point ( the point of flexion of the limbs) is for Aristotle a primitive notion as in geometry a spatial point is a primitive notion with reference to which upon other concepts may be defined. The organic point is the crucial element which allows one to recognize in zoology the different living organisms. For example, the convex lower flexion identifies humans, the concave lower flexion identifies birds.

First Person: Reduce National Debt, Cut Spending

Yahoo! News asked voters to pinpoint one single issue they'd like to see addressed at the Republican National Convention. Here are one voter's thoughts.

I believe debt reduction should be discussed at the GOP convention. With my background in accounting and finance, U.S. national debt and lack of a balanced budget concerns me most. We must elect a president and Congress that understand they cannot continue to borrow money from internal or foreign lenders in order to pay for recurring expenses. Keeping some debt is good to secure a good credit rating, but a national debt of $15 trillion and counting is alarming! I, as an individual, live within a budget during the year; why can't government? Stop borrowing (incurring debt), and don't incur expenses greater than revenue in a year. Is this possible now?

Taiwanese minister wants men to sit down to urinate

Should men sit down when urinating? (PR Newswire)Is it an unnecessary form of emasculation or a reasonable expectation of men in the modern age? The minister of Taiwan's Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) has said that men should sit down when urinating.

The BBC reports that Stephen Shen has stirred debate online by suggesting the change in bathroom habits would lean to a cleaner environment. Shen has instructed local governments to put up notices in public restrooms "advising" men to sit when using the toilet.

"We want to learn from Japan and Sweden," Yuan Shaw-jing, EPA director general of environmental sanitation and toxic substance maintenance, told the BBC. "In Japan, we heard 30 percent of the men sit."

In June, Sweden's Left Party put forward a motion requiring men to sit down when using the toilet. Along with improved public hygienic standards, the Left Party cited research that it claims shows men "empty their bladders more effectively" when sitting down.

Taiwan's EPA said it has no authority to force men to change their bathroom habits and is simply putting up the notices as a suggestion to help improve the sanitary standards of the nation's estimated 100,000 public toilets.

And lest someone accuse him of hypocritical behavior, Shen told the BBC he practices what he preaches, both at home and when using public restrooms.

Plants unpack winter coats when days get shorter

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? Mechanisms that protect plants from freezing are placed in storage during the summer and wisely unpacked when days get shorter.

In the current issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Michael Thomashow, University Distinguished Professor of molecular genetics, demonstrates how the CBF (C-repeat binding factor) cold response pathway is inactive during warmer months when days are long, and how it?s triggered by waning sunlight to prepare plants for freezing temperatures.

The CBF cold response pathway was discovered by Thomashow?s team, and it has been shown to be active in crop species as they ready themselves for cold weather.

?We knew that when plants are exposed to cold, nonfreezing temperatures, they can better survive below-freezing temperatures,? said Thomashow, who co-authored the study with Chin-Mei Lee, MSU plant biologist. ?What this new research demonstrates, though, is that plants? defense mechanisms are also triggered by shortening daylight.?

It?s widely known that waning daylight triggers trees? defenses against freezing, but this has never been demonstrated in crops and other annual plants. The paper not only shows that such plants use shorter days as a cue for the impending winter, but that the mechanism also is turned off during the warm growing season.

?The CBF pathway is actively turned off during the summer to prevent the allocation of precious resources toward unneeded frost protection,? Thomashow said.

Identifying the genes involved in this process gives researchers the potential tools to fine tune this regulation and increase crop productivity, he added.

Thomashow?s research is supported in part by the U.S. Department of Energy (Division of Chemical Sciences, Geosciences, and Biosciences, Office of Basic Energy Sciences), the National Science Foundation (Plant Genome Project) and MSU AgBioResearch.

British police call off search for supposed lion

LONDON (AP) ? So, were the locals lying about the lion?

Police said Monday that they've found no evidence to support area residents' claims that they'd spotted a big cat prowling the countryside near the idyllic village of St. Osyth, in the southeastern English county of Essex.

Sunday's reported sightings alarmed many of the village's 4,000 people, and authorities sent about 40 officers, tranquilizer-toting zoo experts, and a pair of heat-seeking helicopters to the area in an effort to find the beast.

But a police spokeswoman said that, after an extensive search, "we've found no evidence" of a lion. The creature spotted Sunday night may have been a large domestic cat or a wildcat, she added.

So does that mean there never was any lion?

The official, who spoke on customary condition of anonymity, demurred, noting that the people interviewed by police were convinced they'd spotted a lion. That aside, she said, "we've stopped searching for it."

It seems the mysterious "Essex Lion" will join a number of other mythical beasts that at times appear and then disappear into Britain's forests and seaside ? particularly in the dead of summer, when journalists struggle to fill papers and news bulletins.

The best-known mystery big cat in Britain was the "Beast of Bodmin," a panther that was allegedly spotted so many times that it prompted a government probe into the matter. The 1995 investigation concluded there was no evidence of exotic large cats roaming the nation's countryside.

In 2011, there was the Hampshire White Tiger, whose alleged appearance near a sports field stopped a cricket game and led to a police alert (the tiger turned out to be a stuffed toy).

And in 2007, the British media went wild over a man who claimed to have photographed a great white shark off the coast of Cornwall, in southwestern England. The man, a bouncer, later admitted that the pictures were actually taken while on vacation in South Africa, adding that he couldn't believe anyone had been foolish enough to take the hoax seriously.

Pro-Palestinian activists barred from West Bank visit

Israel and Jordan on Sunday barred pro-Palestinian US and European activists from trying to cross into the West Bank to deliver aid to students, a number of sources said.

Olivia Zemor, spokeswoman for the "Welcome to Palestine" group spearheading the mission, told AFP that one bus of activists was allowed through the Allenby Bridge border crossing by the Jordanian authorities but the Israelis turned them back.

"The (Israeli) authorities took all their passports and stamped 'entry denied' on all of them and told them to return," she said.

"The second bus was prevented (from crossing) by the Jordanians at the request of the Israeli authorities. They obeyed the orders of the Israelis," she said.

"One police officer told us that 'we got orders from Israel. We cannot let you leave'. We demanded explanation and nobody gave us any explanation. Then some of us demonstrated," she said.

An Israeli defence ministry official in Jerusalem confirmed that Israeli authorities had stopped the activists from entering the West Bank after a group of them arrived at the Allenby Bridge crossing.

"A small group of provocateurs, rioters and known troublemakers arrived at the Allenby crossing earlier today," the official said.

"The state of Israel exercised its right to refuse their entry, and they returned to Jordan."

Earlier Sunday, Walid Attalah, a spokesman for the "Welcome to Palestine" campaign in Jordan told AFP that the two buses had been prevented from crossing by the Jordanians.

"Two buses carrying 100 activists were not allowed to leave the Jordanian side" of Allenby Bridge Crossing, also known as King Hussein Bridge between the West Bank and Jordan, Attalah said.

Atallah said the "activists left the buses and started to demonstrate near the checkpoint. One of them fainted and was taken to hospital."

As part of the campaign, aimed at highlighting Israel's control over entry to the occupied territories, the activists sought to provide Palestinian students with a tonne of toys, pens, notebooks and other supplies.

"This is our fourth initiative to enter Palestine," Zemor told a news conference before leaving for the crossing, around 35 kilometres (20 miles) southeast of Amman.

"We have around 100 participants, from France, Belgium, Spain, Switzerland, the United States, aged between 10 and 50. All kinds of people, from all backgrounds and religions. They are all motivated to visit Palestine."

Five school buses drove the activists to the crossing as they chanted "Free Palestine!" and sang Palestinian traditional songs. Some wore T-shirts with "I have a dream" printed on them, while others flashed V-for-victory sign.

The campaigners tried to enter the occupied West Bank through Israel in July 2011 and April 2012, but the authorities at Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion airport denied them entry.

The activists, who had planned to stay for a week in the West Bank, say their mission comes at the invitation of Bethlehem governor Abdel-Fatah Hamayel.

Some activists had been sceptical in advance they would be allowed in.

"I tried in July last year and April, but the Israelis put me in prison for one day. I expect they will reject us again just like they did before. It is ridiculous and a shame," American volunteer Michael Rabb told AFP.

I want to solder new faucet in, but not licensed-need ur help ...

Question by Kraze: I want to solder new faucet in, but not licensed-need ur help professional plumbers?
I have extreme experience in arlington ma plumbing, among other trades and I want to install a new shower faucet and such, but the apartment wont? let me cause I dont? hold a license in this state,

Since this is an condo I never encountered this. I got the hotwater figured out, question is the main cold supply. But is there some way around this?? perhaps i could cut the pipe, then quickly attach a compression shutoff supply then go from there. I would think this would be an idea, I?m going to test this theory with another supply with a shutoff before I attempt but main importance is homeowners dont? care, and are really fustrated that about the situation, and said if i can get aroudn it to do it, They own the condo, and it should be their right to do it.
So any suggestions from professional plumbers?
Yep thats right, years of experience, over 14 to be exact, electrical, arlington ma plumbing hvac, roofing, new homes, additions remodeling, foundations,
Now im experienced as in own a ?sucessfull? company, I do all trades therefore am not master of none. I know arlington ma plumbing many roughins many many remodels, jacuzzis, sunken and surface, copper sweating no problem,
So in saying this, Its a condo, as in you have to jump through hoops, I am out of state, visiting family. They want their bathroom remodeled, All I need is the water off for 5 minutes, to solder a shutoff on there, But they want a licensed Arlington MA Plumber. NOW?If I didnt? know what I was doing then ok, perhaps, but only hold back is fact that they want that paper, Where Im at they wants $ 350 just to come out. And the reason im in a hurry is because I need to get back to my state so I can continue my companys business.
Now I have always been able to shut off water everywhere I been, this is new to me. Just looking for solutions
Well tech, by your name Im taking it you could be experience in computers not home improvement, so this question is out of your league. I asked for PROFESSIONAL PLUMBERS but guess the points for any answer sufficed.
If there are NO real answers to this solutions then leave it at that. I dont? care if the question isn?t right with you, What isnt? right is not allowing me to shutoff the water in order to do the work. I don?t care who inspects the work or otherwise, but let me tell you about licensed professionals they are nothing but overpriced labor cause they know they are the only ones allowed(not qualified) to do the work. The reason behind this is because city inspectors are to lazy to actually take responsibility for their inspections, but im not goign to get into this.
Point is serious question, PROFESSIONAL
Point is seriuos question, Professional opinions only. water off, NO PROBLEM,
So yeh years of experience, and this is a question way beyond your intelligence.Your answer told me nothign I already didn?t know, drywall? pipes behind a wall? are you kidding me? Yeh, its all goign bye, the tub/vanity/sink, floor, is bye, new electric, so yeh this is a bathroom renovation, which is why I need an answer from experience.
Now?car dude, Yes I understand the place is shared, the pipes that come into their bathroom they own, they own shower, they own the supply. You could be right about what you say, could be and if you are a true home contractor i?ll respect your answer. But with all due respect im asking for a solution to my problem, if there is not a solution, then so be it, if its never been done then great. thats why im researching my QUESTION. Any Plumbers out there?
Oh yeh forgot one more thing, techie I know that compression fitting shouldnt? be used inside walls, and are made for a temporary fix. This is commonsense 101, however
1. there is access to the arlington ma plumbing
2. this is a temporary fix until they either move, or they grant me the right to turn off the water, However I 85% disagree with you about the fittings not being behidn a wall. I have renovated old homes back in the 50?s. Even though they are not regulated by most codes, people and PROFESSIONAL plumbers do ocassionally use these. I say 85% cause they can hairline crack under pressure, but since there is access guess what???it will be fine?just use pipe dope.
so do your research before answering, and dont? assume I dont? know how to do something that I say I do.
Ok got a solution to my problem. But I want to make somethign clear for anyone who looks at this. When somebody ask a question they are asking for an answer, DO NOT give your opinions on whether it should or shouldnt? be done, unless they ask. If you do not know the solution keep your MOUTH SHUT! You are just making yourself look stupid.
now for the money it cost for a Arlington MA Plumber I got a new tool and solution to future problems, I feel so sorry for people who rely on others to fix problems in their life, always taking the easy way out by having someone do it for them. Will never have the feeling of accomplishment.
The ONLY thing a licensed Arlington MA Plumber can do that i can?t 100% of the time is use his license to get approval. Does not make him ANY more qualified than me.

Answer by Tech Dude
You are asking for trouble and a possible lawsuit and eviction. The shower faucet is typically inside the wall, which means that you?ve got to knock a hole in the wall that will later need to be patched. Then you?ve got to remove the old faucet and install the new faucet. This is a major undertaking and you?ve got to know what you are doing.

You propose to cut the cold water pipe and quickly attach a compression shutoff valve. There are at least two things wrong with this idea. First, you should never cut into a pipe unless the water is turned off. You may think you can quickly cap off the open pipe, but you?ve also got a good chance of causing extensive water damage. The second mistake is that you should never, ever use a compression fitting in a concealed space inside a wall. The problem is that a leak could develop with a compression fitting, and you would not know it until the damage had been done.

I suggest that perhaps you don?t have extreme experience in arlington ma plumbing at all. You should not attempt this project by yourself. It would be far cheaper by the time you are done to have hired a licensed professional.

Know better? Leave your own answer in the comments!

(AP) ? President Barack Obama said Mitt Romney has locked himself into "extreme positions" on economic and social issues and would surely impose them if elected, trying to discredit his Republican rival at the biggest political moment of his life.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Obama said Romney lacks serious ideas, refuses to "own up" to the responsibilities of what it takes to be president, and deals in factually dishonest arguments that could soon haunt him in face-to-face debates.

Obama also offered a glimpse of how he would govern in a second term of divided government, insisting rosily that the forces of the election would help break Washington's stalemate. He said he would be willing to make a range of compromises with Republicans, confident there are some who would rather make deals than remain part of "one of the least productive Congresses in American history."

With the remarks, Obama set up a contrast between Romney, whom he cast as an extremist pushing staunchly conservative policies, and himself, by saying he would work across party lines. It was a seeming play for the independent voters who decide close elections and tell pollsters they want to see the often-gridlocked politicians in Washington solve the nation's problems.

Mainly, Obama was intent on countering Romney even before his challenger got to the Republican National Convention, which starts Monday in Tampa, Fla. In doing so, the president depicted his opponent as having accumulated ideas far outside the mainstream with no room to turn back.

"I can't speak to Gov. Romney's motivations," Obama said. "What I can say is that he has signed up for positions, extreme positions, that are very consistent with positions that a number of House Republicans have taken. And whether he actually believes in those or not, I have no doubt that he would carry forward some of the things that he's talked about."

Obama spoke to the AP on Thursday before heading off to a long weekend with his family at Camp David, the secluded presidential retreat in the Maryland mountains.

The president was at ease but doggedly on script, steering even personal-themed questions about Romney and running mate Paul Ryan into answers about starkly different visions for helping the middle class.

Romney, a successful former executive of a private equity firm and one-time Massachusetts governor, will introduce himself to a TV audience of millions next Thursday as he takes the convention stage to accept his party's presidential nomination. He has offered himself as a business-minded alternative to Obama and has seized on voter concerns about joblessness and the direction of the nation.

Nearly 10 weeks before Election Day, the race is remarkably stable and reflective of a sharply divided nation, with registered voters about evenly split on their choice and nearly a quarter of them unsure or still willing to change their mind. Across the interview, Obama's messages often seemed directed at moderate and independent voters whose sway could make the difference.

Obama's depiction of a Romney presidency grew most pointed when he was asked if his Republican challenger has no core, as one of Obama's top advisers once put it.

The president suggested that whatever Romney really stands for in life is secondary to the promises Romney has made in the campaign.

In explaining his accusation of "extreme" positions, the president cited Romney's call for across-the-board tax cuts that Obama said would mostly help the rich at the expense of everyone else and cost the nation $5 trillion. Obama singled out Romney's opposition to tax credits for producers of wind energy, the kind of issue that carries large political resonance in a battleground state such as Iowa.

And Obama alluded to the provocative issue of abortion, suddenly thrust to the fore this week when Republican Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin said the female body has a way to "shut that whole thing down" when a woman is the victim of "legitimate rape."

The Republican platform in Tampa calls for a ban on abortion with no specific exceptions for rape or other circumstances. Obama predicted that a President Romney would not "stand in the way" if Congress gave him a bill that stripped away women's control over their reproductive health.

Romney is on record, however, as not opposing abortion in cases of rape and incest or if it will save the mother's life.

Polling shows social issues such as abortion represent perhaps Obama's best opportunity to draw support from Romney. Obama already holds a broad lead as the candidate more trusted to handle those social issues among Democrats and independents. The issue is one of Romney's biggest vulnerabilities among moderate and liberal Republicans.

Obama also sought to chip away at Romney's trustworthiness, taking fresh shots at Romney's refusal to release years of tax returns for public inspection. He said that position was indicative of a candidate who has a "lack of willingness to take responsibility for what this job entails."

Yet it is the economy that has driven this election and has dominated Obama's message of a middle-class revival.

"We aren't where we need to be. Everybody agrees with that," said Obama, who inherited an economy in free fall and now bears responsibility for a recovery that remains weak. "But Gov. Romney's policies would make things worse for middle-class families and offer no prospect for long-term opportunity for those striving to get into the middle class," the president said.

A Romney spokesman, Ryan Williams, jumped on Obama's account in the interview that the economy clearly needs to get better. "Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan agree," Williams said. "The American people know they aren't better off than they were four years ago."

Obama holds a decisive advantage over Romney when Americans are asked who better understands their daily woes. Yet nearly two-thirds of people in a new AP-GfK poll say the economy is in poor shape, and 60 percent say the country is headed in the wrong direction.

Obama expressed confidence that even voters whose lives have not improved during his term will stick with him as they assess the two candidates.

"If they saw Gov. Romney offering serious proposals that offered some sort of concrete ways in which middle-class families would be helped, then I could understand them thinking about that choice," Obama said. "But that's not what's happening."

And therein lies the central case that Obama made in the interview, as he has made for months, and as he will again at his own party's convention in Charlotte, N.C., in early September.

Obama said he is the candidate whose policies have historically helped the middle class on issues that people care about and that shape the economy ? education, manufacturing, science and research, Medicare, debt reduction, tax rates, health care, consumer protection, college aid, energy.

Williams, the Romney spokesman, responded that Obama has piled up national debt and presided over high unemployment. "Too many middle-class families are going to sleep each night worried," he said. "This may be the best President Obama can do, but it's not the best America can do."

The moment that could finally shake up a close race could come in the three debates Obama and Romney hold in October. The president said Romney could run into trouble because of arguments that are not backed up by facts, citing a widely debunked television ad campaign in which Romney accuses Obama of gutting the work requirement in the federal welfare law.

"It will be a little tougher to defend face-to-face," Obama said.

Obama's view of a different second-term dynamic in Washington, even if both he and House Republicans retain power, seems a stretch given the stalemated politics of a divided government. He said two changes ? the facts that "the American people will have voted," and that Republicans will no longer need to be focused on beating him ? could lead to better conditions for deal-making.

If Republicans are willing, Obama said, "I'm prepared to make a whole range of compromises" that could even rankle his own party. But he did not get specific.

The 25-minute interview, conducted in the library of the White House residence, was part of a multi-faceted campaign by Obama's team to snag some of the spotlight during Romney's big week. Obama denied the notion, widely if quietly held in political circles, that the fiercely competitive president is also driven to beat Romney because he does not hold him in high regard.

"I don't really know him well," Obama said. "The big arguments that I have with Gov. Romney have to do with where we take this country forward."

U.S. Anti-Doping Agency strips Armstrong of titles for cheating

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Lance Armstrong was stripped of his record seven Tour de France wins and handed a lifetime ban by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) on Friday, but he remained defiant as supporters rallied around the American cyclist.

Saying, "enough is enough", Armstrong sent out a statement late on Thursday indicating that he would not challenge USADA's charges he had doped throughout his career, though he continued to deny he ever used performance-enhancing drugs.

While the USADA can remove Armstrong's titles, such a decision could ultimately rest with the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland, should the International Cycling Union (UCI) challenge the USADA's ruling.

But weary from years of denial, legal battles, skirmishes with former-team mates and anti-doping chiefs, it is a fight Armstrong says he no longer has the stomach for.

"Today I will turn the page," Armstrong said. "I will no longer address this issue regardless of the circumstances."

Armstrong may have turned the page but the story is far from over.

One of the sporting world's most polarizing figures, Armstrong remains a hero to millions of cancer survivors for beating the disease and coming back to win the Tour de France a record seven times. To others, he is a drug cheat and fraud.

World Anti-doping Agency (WADA) chief John Fahey said that Armstrong's decision not to contest the allegations adds up to nothing more than an admission of guilt.

"He had the right to rip up those charges, but he elected not to. Therefore the only interpretation in these circumstances is that there was substance in those charges," Fahey told Reuters in a telephone interview on Friday.

The debate over Armstrong's guilt will now rage, with some heavy hitters like longtime sponsor Nike, the world's biggest sportswear maker, lining up alongside the disgraced cyclist, while anti-doping crusaders proudly claim victory.

Since 2004, Nike has helped Livestrong, Armstrong's organization to help cancer survivors, raise over $100 million for cancer research and created the Livestrong yellow wristbands that became a global phenomenon with over 84 million bands distributed.

CONTROVERSIAL CYCLIST

"Lance has stated his innocence and has been unwavering on this position. Nike plans to continue to support Lance and the Lance Armstrong Foundation, a foundation that Lance created to serve cancer survivors," Nike said in a statement.

Armstrong, 40, has been one of the most successful and controversial cyclists of all time, returning to the sport after beating cancer to win the Tour de France seven straight times, from 1999 to 2005.

Livestrong takes its inspiration from his achievements and recovery from testicular cancer that also made him a hero to many and boosted the sport's popularity in the United States.

The cyclist also made many enemies throughout his career, with several of his former teammates and colleagues allegedly ready to testify he doped.

Former teammate and deposed Tour de France winner Floyd Landis accused Armstrong in 2010 of using performance-enhancing drugs and teaching others how to avoid being caught.

But Armstrong also has his loyalists, outside and inside the sport, such as Jim Ochowicz, director of the BMC cycling team and a long-time friend who helped him when he was an amateur rider and young professional.

"As a friend of Lance's, I support his decision to call it an end," said Ochowicz. "He has done so much for our sport over the years, and I am sad at what has transpired.

"I love him. I know he still has a big fight ahead of him and his battle of trying to find a cure for cancer and help survivors and carry on with the Lance Armstrong foundation.

"I think he has earned every victory he's had," he said.

The USADA, however, believes it has enough compelling evidence to prove Armstrong did not claim his victories fairly.

A quasi-governmental agency created by the U.S. Congress in 2000, the USADA formally charged Armstrong in June with doping and taking part in a conspiracy with members of his championship teams.

EVIDENCE AGAINST ARMSTRONG IN HAND

The agency said in a letter to Armstrong that it has blood samples from 2009 and 2010 that are "fully consistent" with doping.

Michael McCann, an expert in sports law at Vermont Law School, said that Armstrong's decision to not contest the USADA charges in arbitration might have been the cyclist's best option in the face of mounting circumstantial evidence.

"This gives his supporters reason to support him," McCann told Reuters. "Whereas if he had gone to arbitration and lost - which I think almost definitely would have happened - from a public relations standpoint, that would have been much more harmful."

In losing his titles, Armstrong joins Canadian Ben Johnson and American Marion Jones as the highest-profile athletes to lose championships as a result of doping sanctions.

Johnson was stripped of the 1988 Seoul Olympics 100 meters title after testing positive for a steroid, while Jones lost her 2000 Sydney Olympics 100, 200 and 4x400 meters relay gold medals when she confessed she had been taking drugs at the time.

Armstrong may not be able to simply turn his back on the saga and walk away with his head held high.

There is the possibility he could face legal action from promoters and race organizers looking to recover prize money.

"My sense is they're not going to sue (him) for the money because it would be an expensive piece of litigation," said Brian Getz, a criminal defense attorney who represented an American sprinter against doping allegations. "It may not be worth it to the organization trying to recover the funds."

It also remains to be seen what impact the USADA's action will have on Armstrong's endorsement potential and ability to continue to raise funds for his foundation.

Despite having his reputation tarnished, Armstrong's triumph over cancer and fundraising efforts make him a valuable pitchman, say marketing experts.

While Nike was quick to stand by Armstrong, his other sponsors, including RadioShack; exercise bike maker Johnson Health Tech; sunglass maker Oakley, owned by Italy's Luxottica; and Michelob, made by Anheuser-Busch InBev, have not leapt to his defense.

Robert Boland, professor of sports management at New York University, said Armstrong's extensive work on cancer will help blunt the impact of the lost titles.

"His story has not been diminished. Here's a guy who essentially was at death's door with cancer and came back. That example still makes him very compelling," he said.

Still, Boland said it would be difficult for Armstrong to continue to endorse bicycles or bicycle equipment, since he is now banned from competitions.

"If he can't show up at certain events, how do you use him?"

With the possibility that each of his seven Tour de France crowns could go to other riders, Armstrong maintained that no matter what the USADA has ruled, those he competed with and against will always know he was the true winner.

Spain's Fernando Escartin, who will rise from third to second in the 1999 Tour de France following the USADA's decision, said the American would always be the champion.

"For me, Lance Armstrong remains the 1999 Tour winner, second Zulle and third, me," the now-retired Escartin told Reuters at the Vuelta a Espana race on Friday.

"It's 13 years now since this all happened. It seems completely illogical and unreal. I don't want to even think about it."
