CA: Occupy protest at Rose Parade angers 'tea party' activists

Rose Parade braces for protesters
"Tea party" activists are angry that Occupy protesters plan a demonstration during the Rose Parade, but have? dropped their plans to launch a counter-demonstration.

Michael Alexander, president and founder of TEAPAC, a Pasadena-based tea party group, said his members at outraged that Occupy would try to ?politicize? the Rose Parade and began formulating a counter-protest. But after talking to police, his group decided to stand down.

"We have decided to not be part of this piece of drama and exercise in street theater," he said. "Pasadena is entitled to one day without politics."

Occupy activists said they are disappointed that the tea party won?t be on hand.

"We consider them our brothers and sisters in arms in our fight to take back control of our country,"? said Occupy spokesman Pete Thottam.

Pasadena police and Tournament of Roses officials have been negotiating with Occupy forces for several weeks on a plan they hope will prevent any disruptions of the parade.

Pasadena officials are allowing the Occupy group to march the route at the end of the parade, after all the floats have passed.

Protesters intend to march with large banners decrying wealth inequality in the United States and to unveil a few colorful "floats" of their own, including a giant people-powered octopus, Thottam said.

Pasadena police Lt. Phlante Riddle said officials believe that the situation is under control.

"We?ve enjoyed 122 uninterrupted parades and [the] 123rd won?t be any different," Riddle said. "We have seen protests before, be it PETA, impeach George Bush or protests over Christopher Columbus. We have dealt with fears over Y2K and we are prepared for the Occupy movement."

Fearing split, pastors urge GOP candidates to quit (AP)

DES MOINES, Iowa ? Two politically active pastors in Iowa's robust evangelical conservative movement say that an effort is under way to persuade either Rick Santorum or Michele Bachmann to consider quitting the Republican presidential race ahead of next week's caucuses.

The hope is that one would endorse the other to avoid splintering the influence of this influential voting bloc.

The pleas represent a fear among a group of evangelical conservative voters that this year's caucuses could be won by former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney or Texas congressman Ron Paul.

Neither Romney nor Paul track as closely to the religious right as Santorum, Bachmann or Texas Gov. Rick Perry.

Man United routs Wigan

By ROB HARRIS

updated 3:15 p.m. ET Dec. 26, 2011

LONDON (AP) -Manchester United flourished as Manchester City floundered on Monday to wipe out its neighbor's lead in the Premier League title race.

City's was left clinging to top spot on goal difference after its expensively assembled attacking unit failed to score in the league for the first time this season in a 0-0 draw at West Bromwich Albion.

Injury-hit United took full advantage, with Dimitar Berbatov's hat trick powering the champions to a second 5-0 rout in a week against Wigan.

"We're really hitting good form now and there's a real goal threat about us from all departments," United manager Alex Ferguson said. "If we're top of the league or joint top with City by New Year's Day I'll be happy."

Combined with Wednesday's 5-0 thrashing of Fulham, United seems to have shaken off its early Champions League exit earlier this month.

"It was a wake-up call because maybe everyone looked at themselves in the mirror and said, 'We can do much better,"' United defender Patrice Evra said. "What the fans expect of every player, we are doing now."

City and United are 10 points ahead of third-place Tottenham, which plays the first of two games in hand at Norwich on Tuesday.

Chelsea is a point further back in fourth and has all but given on up on its title hopes after Fulham condemned its west London rival to a third consecutive 1-1 draw.

Liverpool, three points behind Chelsea in sixth, failed to seize on Chelsea's slip-up, drawing 1-1 at home to bottom-place Blackburn.

Almost halfway through the season, the title race looks more and more like a two-horse race, although City is starting to show signs of weaknesses after setting a record for the best start ever to a Premier League campaign.

Mario Balotelli struck the top of the crossbar from 30 yards (meters) at the start of the second half having already had a goal disallowed when he volleyed home only to see an offside flag raised.

Lacking their usual bite, the leaders were frustrated by the hosts, who also hit the goal frame through Jerome Thomas.

"We know it is maybe impossible to stay at the top for 38 games but we will try," City manager Roberto Mancini said. "Maybe if we scored in the first half we would have scored two or three goals."

United achieved even more than that, as Park Ji-sung took just eight minutes to put his team in front, picking a spot in the top right of the net after being picked out by Evra's cutback.

United took full advantage of Wigan's Conor Sammon being sent off for fouling Michael Carrick, with Berbatov - on his second start of the season - holding off Antolin Alcaraz before netting his first of the day.

United had another injury setback at halftime when it lost Jonny Evans, its only fit center back, with a calf injury that is expected to rule him out for two weeks.

Thankfully for United all the pressure was on the Wigan goal. Berbatov latched onto Antonio Valencia's pass before firing a shot beyond Ali Al Habsi.

Valencia got on the scoresheet himself with a low strike before Berbatov completed his hat trick to make up ground on City in the goal difference stakes.

After Park was fouled by Alcaraz, substitute Wayne Rooney allowed Berbatov to net a third from the penalty spot.

"If we win and score goals and keep many clean sheets, like we did tonight, we're going to be at the top of the league at the end of the season," Evra said.

While United's focus is on a 20th league title, Chelsea's is just staying in the four Champions League places.

Juan Mata had put Chelsea in front at the start of the second half, but Clint Dempsey equalized with only Fulham's fifth away goal this season.

At the bottom of the table, Blackburn nudged closer to its relegation rivals by earning a point at Liverpool.

Liverpool midfielder Charlie Adam put the ball into his own net on the stroke of halftime after a corner from Morten Gamst Pedersen to give Blackburn a surprising lead.

Maxi Rodriguez spared Liverpool from embarrassment after the break with his 11th goal in his last 12 starts. But even the return of captain Steven Gerrard after a two-month absence with an ankle injury as a second-half substitute couldn't inspire Liverpool to salvage a victory.

Blackburn is just a point behind Bolton, which lost 2-0 to a Newcastle side that had not won in six matches.

Sunderland climbed four points clear of the danger zone with a 1-1 draw at Everton.

Payroll Tax Extension Sparks GOP Candidate Debate (ContributorNetwork)

After a prolonged partisan stalemate, House Speaker John Boehner announced on Thursday that congressional leaders had reached a deal to extend the payroll tax cut.

The New York Times reports that the plan extends both the current level of the payroll tax and unemployment insurance benefits through February, and on his Twitter account, President Obama declared that ?because of this agreement, every working American will keep his or her tax cut?about $1,000 for the average family.?

Still, many Republicans, including some of the contenders for the GOP presidential nomination, have called the proposal a gimmick and a temporary band-aid.

Here is what they have said, specifically, according to recent ABC News and CNBC Republican debate transcripts:

* Michele Bachmann: ?This tax cut shouldn?t have been put in the first place, the payroll tax extension, because last December, I fought against this. And I encouraged my colleagues not to go down this road. This is President Obama?s plan, a temporary gimmick, not permanent solution. ? The reason why this is so detrimental to the economy as well is that this blew a hole, in other words, it took away $111 billion away from the Social Security Trust Fund. This is a very real issue for senior citizens, because we have to pay the Social Security checks that are going out.?

* Ron Paul: ?I want to extend the tax cut, because if you don?t, you raise the taxes. But I wanna pay for it. And it?s not that difficult. In my proposal, in my budget, I wanna cut hundreds of billions of dollars from overseas. The trust fund is gone. But how are we gonna restore it? We have to quit the spending. We have to quit this being the policemen of the world.?

* Newt Gingrich: ?I?m not prepared to raise taxes on working Americans in the middle of a recession that?s this bad. But let me put Social Security in context. In 1968, in order to fake a balanced budget, Lyndon Johnson brought Social Security into the general budget. And ever since politicians have hid behind Social Security.

I think the first step is you take Social Security off the federal budget and you don?t try to solve the budget deficit problem on the back of working Americans and retirees.?

* Mitt Romney: ?I don?t wanna raise taxes on people, particularly people in the middle class that are suffering right now under the Obama economy. It?s a temporary tax cut, and it?ll help people in a very difficult time. But let?s recognize, this is just a band-aid. ?I?m not looking to raise taxes. What I?m looking to do is to cut spending. And that?s why this last week I put out a plan that dramatically cuts spending in Washington, that gets us to a 20 percent cap, and makes sure that we have a balanced budget thereafter.?

* Rick Perry: ?We?re either gonna have a serious debate on how to fix Social Security, and we?re not gonna do it by taking resources away from Social Security to pay benefits. So I?m all for tax cuts ? I?ll welcome the president to sit down with Republicans in Congress to work on a tax cut that?s gonna create growth in the economy. But to take the Social Security Trust Fund that is so sacrosanct to the Democrats when it comes for election time and then to use that as a tax and then try to beat up Republicans for not supporting the tax cut is absurd. You either care about Social Security and you wanna fund it, or you don?t.?

Why do GOP members need oath to lobbyist?

I am amazed that Congress takes time away from vital fundraising to pursue baseball players.

After countless dollars and eight years, Barry Bonds is given a 30-day house arrest and a $4,000 fine. After the extensive hearings, this is the best they got?

Another example of congressional waste is Congress fighting for the old light bulbs instead of the fluorescent bulbs. Way to go, guys. You certainly don't waste time on real budget and spending reform because that would take cooperation, and it is important for Republicans to prevent President Barack Obama's re-election, no matter what it costs the nation.

I do have one question for Republican congressmen: Didn't you take an oath to defend America from enemies, foreign and domestic, and to uphold the Constitution? Why do you need an oath to a lobbyist, Grover Norquist, when you already took a pretty good oath?

I now understand why George Washington was so against party and faction. He understood that the Congress would serve narrow interests and not the nation.

Church brings snow for Christmas in Florida

A Florida church says about 10,000 people turned out to see something kind of miraculous for the balmy state - a hill of snow.

Bayside Community Church trucked in 25 tons of snow for a four-day "Family Christmas Spectacular."

The Bradenton church's director of events, Gregg Ellery, tells The Herald ( http://bit.ly/tw9Z9H) that most of the snow was piled into a hill about 55 feet long and 15 feet tall.

Children up to age 18 were allowed to take rides down the big snow hill on orange and green discs. A smaller snow pile was made for toddlers to play in.

The event also included a live nativity scene including two camels, a petting zoo and pony and train rides. It ended Saturday.

More Than 26,000 U.S. Jobs to Be Created in First-Quarter 2012 as 244 Industrial Plants Begin Operations, an Industrial Info News Alert

SOURCE: Industrial Info Resources

SUGAR LAND, TX--(Marketwire - Dec 23, 2011) - Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas) -- Jobs, or a lack thereof, have been on many people's minds for the entirety of 2011. In the post-recession environment, millions remain out of work, and finding a solution to this situation has been problematic for the highest levels of government. While the unemployment rate has been dropping in recent months, the level of jobs creation has been slow and is not likely to improve in the coming year, given the economic uncertainty facing the United States and the rest of the world.

However, jobs are being created each and every month, in part thanks to new industrial plants beginning operations after construction has been completed. Along those lines, a look ahead at the first quarter of 2012 shows that some 244 industrial plants are scheduled to begin operations in the U.S., creating more than 26,000 much-needed jobs.

Facebook Opens Mobile News Feed As Viral Channel For Games

Mobile News Feed GamesOnce upon a time, Facebook game companies like Zynga fattened up their user counts thanks to viral distribution to non-gamers through the news feed. Facebook later curtailed this channel, forcing developers to concentrate on paid marketing and true word of mouth to grow. A new boom period could be coming, this time for mobile developers, as Facebook announced today that it is testing game stories in the mobile news feed. This could attract devs to its recently launched HTML5 mobile gaming platform with bait of reaching hundreds of millions of daily active Facebook mobile users.

Vita download game sales "exceeding expectations" - Sony

Sony has said that the sales figures for digital download versions of Vita software are "exceeding expectations".

As reported earlier, PlayStation Vita's 20 launch games sold a combined total of 300,000 copies in the system's first two days of availability, according to Japanese retail tracker Media Create.

That compares unfavourably to the 0.95 first week attach rate of 3DS and the 1.06 first week attach rate of PSP, but that does not take in account the games Vita owners have purchased digitally via PSN.

Speaking at a press conference for Gung Ho Entertainment's Ragnarok Odyssey in Japan this week, Sony Computer Entertainment Japan CEO Hiroshi Kawano said the retail sales were "a figure in accordance with expectations".

But he went on to add: "Sales of the download versions of titles are exceeding expectations," and that games and peripherals are selling extremely well."

Kawano refrained from revealing any hint of the download figures.
